Aprendió a sorprenderse, a esperar cualquier cosa.

PP: ¡Cómo no me voy a acordar!

PP: Ahora me amplío a Latinoamérica.

¿O no?

Interview with Aramís Quintero

By Pepe Pelayo

Humor, as a creative and artistic work, has always been underestimated

I came to meet Aramís Quintero at the First Latin American Film Festival in Havana, despite being fellow countrymen and working on similar things in the same city. We went as delegates from Matanzas. He for the Cultural Cinema department and I as president of the Cine-Club of the province. They placed us in the same hotel room. At dawn on the first day, I got up very early to go to the bathroom and as I passed by his bed, I noticed that on his nightstand he had a book of poems by Ernesto Cardenal. I dared to leaf through it and without reaching the end, I heard Aramís' voice saying something like “do you like poetry?” My response was “I read little poetry.” And I added: “Do you like Omar Khayyam's poetry?” I could never find out why I asked him that. Maybe because he was the last poet I had read, I don't know. Then Aramís, surprised and thinking that I was a shameless liar, told me: “Why did you read my poem?” I didn't understand anything at that moment. Afterwards we clarify. It turns out that Aramís, upon returning to the hotel that night, was inspired and wrote a poem on a piece of paper where he mentioned Omar Khayyam. He folded the paper and placed it at the end of Cardenal's book. But I swear I didn't even see that little piece of paper, because I couldn't get to the end when I was leafing through it. What happened was something strange, because Khayyam is not someone well-known and popular enough to be mentioning him, much less someone who does not regularly read poetry like me. Anyway, that “mysterious” fact brought us together and we immediately became great friends.

Later the story is better known. Realizing how similar our senses of humor are, together with our great friend Moisés Rodríguez we created the literary and graphic humor group “Tubería de Media Pulgada”. And then we founded the stage humor group “La Seña del Humor de Matanzas”.

In La Seña we wrote the scripts together, we did the artistic direction, the direction of actors, the lighting and audio designs and we almost always acted forming a couple of contrasting humor. Height differences; Furthermore, he was serious and solemn and I was the opposite.

And finally, life brought us closer when we were both hired by National Television of Chile, to write the last 60 episodes of the program “Pin Pon” by Jorge Guerra and to stay and live in this country.

Therefore, in addition to being an honor to interview him, it is very pleasant.

Beginning...

PP: You were always a respected poet, a literary laureate. Suddenly you give yourself over to humorous creation, first amateurishly and then professionally. Did that come to mess up your life? To shake up your goals and ambitions a little? How did it change you?

ARAMÍS: I don't remember any feeling of disorder or disorder, on the contrary, I remember that stage as very stimulating. Even before La Seña, when you and I started doing humorous things, you will remember how much fun we had. And then La Seña perhaps had an impact on my literary development, due to the work with the scripts, the creation of dialogues, situations, etc. I was always clear that the texts were essential to the humor we wanted to create, and I took it seriously. That type of humor, and the level we wanted to achieve, was based first and foremost on the texts. That demanded a lot of me, and stimulated me. Although it is also true that it took away a lot of time that I could have dedicated to literary work and reading that would have been very good for me at that time.

PP: Of course I remember how much fun we had. Sometimes, while creating on the couches at home, we had to stop working because we were literally crying with laughter.

But regardless of how fun it was for you to do humor, what importance do you give to humor in your work and in your life?

ARAMÍS: For me it is of first order importance. We already know that humor, as a creative and artistic work, has always been underestimated. I remember that at first some people who knew me as a writer did not understand that I dedicated myself to doing “graces” on stage. But as a child, I really liked The Tremendous Court and other humorous radio and TV programs. And then I was seduced by the humor found in great writers like Cervantes, Chekhov, Chesterton, Eca de Queiroz, Umberto Eco, and others. And in a mime like Marcel Marceau. And of course in great figures of cinema. I clearly felt that humor is an essential human dimension, a factor of balance in one's vision of life and art. The lack of development and stimulation of that dimension is something serious, it is a serious mutilation of the spirit. I can't conceive a healthy life without humor. And as for my own literary work, humor has been frequent, not only in my books for children but also in those for adults.

PP: I totally agree. But I continue: your work in La Seña del Humor is divided into two parts: before 1992 and after that year. What were the creative differences? Did you enjoy that second stage more, or less?

ARAMÍS: The second stage forced me to work much harder on everything necessary to bring ideas to a stage, which meant greater personal development. But there were so many adversities that I couldn't enjoy it like before. The first adversity was that I returned alone from our trip to Chile. Our complicity and mutual support for everything about La Seña is over. The fun time that you and I shared inventing numbers and shows is over. And you know the story, the group disintegrated. Everyone was going from bad to worse, and the people of La Seña were no exception. There were only four of us left, fighting against all odds, as Popeye said Sinbad said. We no longer had support for anything (transport, production, dissemination, etc.), and we earned a pittance. Just telling you that once the payment for a performance consisted of a bag of milk. (And well it came to us). And last time, they didn't pay us. Of course I didn't enjoy it the same. Imagine, I had moments when I would have sent everything to hell, if I could. Well, that's what I did in the end.

PP: Despite so many hardships, I know that La Seña continued its work without losing its style and filled the Sauto Theater as always. In that I have to take my hat off to you and to Moisés, Leandro and Adrián for surviving in those hard 90s and even more so in the province, after having touched heaven in Cuba in the 80s.

From your perspective, separating yourself as much as possible from your bias by being founder, co-writer, comedian and co-artistic director until 1992 and screenwriter, comedian, artistic and general director until 1999, could you summarize the achievements of La Seña, its contribution, its impact on Cuban society?

ARAMÍS: That question is very broad. That's what I referred to in my story of the group, La Seña del Humor de Matanzas, published on Amazon. In summary, La Seña marked a before and after in the outlook on stage humor in Cuba, in the ways of doing,

in the spirit of that humor, even in the expectations of the public. The public learned to expect something very different from what was a comedy of manners, for example, or a joke teller, or an imitator, to mention three well-known forms. He learned to be surprised, to expect anything. It was a big code switch. And well, bias aside, I refer to the facts: what has been called “new Cuban humor”, in the scene, began with La Seña, in January 1984.

On the other hand, many La Seña numbers were not only humorous but also cute, you remember how we enjoyed that when creating them, and then in the editing. I think our group was distinguished by that artistic flight. With musicians and a designer as good as ours, we could do whatever we wanted on stage, with grace and beauty.

PP: Don't even talk to me about that. I still drool remembering each of our numbers. I'm so proud of that work! But now tell me, would you have liked the Seña to have continued as it was in 1991? Would you have liked to expand the group's work, by having good creators in other artistic manifestations? Would you have liked it to have been screened internationally?

ARAMÍS: In 1991 we did the show Cinemaseña, where only four members of the group worked. Different problems influenced this reduction, you surely remember. It was a new show, very gratifying artistically, and for its success with the public, which was the same as always. But, to answer your question, I would have wanted La Seña to continue as it was in 1989, let's say, before the problems worsened. I would have liked to continue doing what we did, with increasingly greater creative demands, with numbers as elaborate as “La fuga”, which we presented in 1990. And perhaps, eventually, we would have included other artistic manifestations, I don't know. In fact, at Cinemaseña we use cinema, right? I think we could have done a lot of things. And an international projection, which we wanted so much, would have perhaps helped us a lot. But the fates did not want it that way. Remember that they sent us invitations that were buried in the dark drawers of fate.

PP: How can I not remember! Now I ask you a question that several admirers of our group have asked me: would La Seña's humor work in these times in Cuba?

ARAMÍS: I don't know. But I don't rule it out. When La Seña began, a few prophesied that this mood was not going to work, that the terrain was not favorable for it. And they had their reasons. Now there could also be reasons in that sense, but I doubt they would be definitive. Humor like La Seña is flexible, both in terms of themes and in terms of forms and levels. It can have a massive audience, or a more selective one. The humor of La Seña, with so much play, and so much absurdity and white humor, fit very well with the Cuban way of being, that was decisive in the immediate acceptance of the public, and now the same thing could happen. In short, if it were possible, experience would say the last word, just as it did in the 80s.

PP: Do you know that on the La Seña Facebook page many people write asking that we meet again? Do you see that possible from a practical point of view of the members and whether it is worth doing?

ARAMÍS: In practice it doesn't seem possible to me. At least, not the entire group. We already lost Miguelito, and Lueje, our producer. And the rest are still numerous and difficult to gather. Maybe three or four. What if it's worth it? Well, it would be worth it if those three or four could prepare, from a distance, a worthwhile presentation. That is the most difficult thing, and if artistically it is not worth it, then the meeting is not worth it, except to see each other and give each other a hug, which is always worth it.

PP: I am leaving the topic “Signistics”. For you, are there differences between current Cuban humor and that made in the 80s?

ARAMÍS: What I know about current Cuban humor is very fragmentary, I can't tell you much. But already at the end of the 90s I saw that a quite different humor was gaining ground, further away from theater and closer to commercial TV and the most common entertainment spaces. The humor of the 80s in Cuba was a case of unrepeatable astral conjunction: theater was thought of, with no other rating than the immediate laughter of the audience. To a large extent white humor was used, which was very significant. Commercial interest did not prevail, you know, the only predominant interest was in terms of ingenuity and art. The differences were determined by talent and creativity. And the public was part of the astral phenomenon, because, although deep down it differentiated the creative levels, it welcomed them all equally. Everyone had a place. I don't know of anything like it anywhere else.

PP: And to continue with the comparisons, can you tell me the differences between Cuban and Chilean humor, since you know both well?

ARAMÍS: That would be a very laborious comparison. And if I want to make it simpler, I fake it. I am not going to pretend to be an anthropologist or a sociologist or a psychologist. I know the Cuban stage humor of the 80s and the Chilean television humor of now, but there are no terms of comparison there. I know the radio humor of The Tremendous Court, but I don't know anything comparable in Chile. I think that Cuban humor has a broader and more diverse history in terms of artistic forms and levels. I also know that on Chilean TV years ago there were humorous spaces that were more artistically elaborate than those of now. I think that the ones now are like those on TV anywhere: improvised, thick, facile, at times rude, and very limited to the contingent. And if suddenly there is a flash of comic relief, hallelujah. Outside of TV you can find something better, but exceptional. And what is not on TV, like it does not exist. In Chile there are high-level actors and actresses who could do very good humor, but, in practice, here humor does not have the consideration that it has always had in Cuba.

PP: Now I am expanding to Latin America. What do you think of the change that has happened on this Continent when stand-up comedy has become so fashionable, displacing traditional humorous theater a little or a lot?

ARAMÍS: Well, personal talents prevail, as always. With any format. But the stand up comedy format facilitates ease, improvisation, and anyone can believe themselves capable of doing it well. There is nothing there other than the personal grace of whoever does it, and the quality of their text. And apart from these two factors, before any presentation it is worth asking: is there effective work with the text? What artistic demand is at stake? As you know, in this format you do not have to play a character, no performance is required. But a text must be said. And saying a text effectively and with a humorous level is a challenge. Or not? If people simply laugh at a vulgarity or the mockery of a public figure, that in itself does not speak well of either the text or the person saying it. Not even from the public.

PP: But, unfortunately, that is what is frequently happening. Now I expand even further and cover the entire world. Has the qualitative level of humor decreased in all artistic manifestations in these times? Has the same thing happened in all the arts in general?

ARAMÍS: I can't cover that much. But I think that very good things continue to be done in different languages, I see something every now and then. The problem is the overcrowding that exists in everything. A more overwhelming massification than ever, and we already know the relationship between massiveness and quality. I do believe that the level of television humor has had an advantage for a long time in rolling and rolling, as the Mexican song says. For a long time rolling towards the abyss, and it doesn't stop.

PP: Then I leave the world and focus on you. Are you aware that you are a very prominent figure in the history of Cuban humor, both for your work in La Seña and for your humorous literature?

ARAMÍS. Pela, that question would force me to get into the famous character Modesto Humble Simple, and I don't have it well rehearsed. Furthermore, standing out, or not standing out, is always determined by others, when there is already a perspective. And usually, at that point the interested party is no longer there, so they are not going to be happy or depressed. I am aware of what I did, but not how it will look in perspective. This goes for humor, and for all literary work.

PP: It is logical that you avoid answering. But it is not necessary to talk about the future to know it. If you are aware of what you did and compare it objectively with the past, with the history of Cuban humor, it could give you light that you will be in that history in your own right. But let's continue personally. After publishing the book of the History of La Seña, the book of the scripts of the La Seña repertoire and the book of humorous stories, do you have other projects in mind, both humorous for adults and children?

ARAMÍS: I have some children's novels shelved in which there is a lot of humor. When I publish them I will see if there was something in mind underneath them.

PP: What would you like to do within humor that you haven't done until now?

ARAMÍS: If it were for the scene, it would be something like the humor of La Seña, but perhaps with even more absurdity, and with more reflection, while still being playful.

PP: I'm going to close this interview with a question that I ask almost everyone: can you think of a question that you wish I had asked you? And if so, can you answer it here and now?

ARAMÍS: You could ask me the classic question of whether I am an optimist or not. And yes, Pela, I am definitely an optimist, although I don't think I have good reasons for it.

Well, as Einstein would say, thank you for the space-time you have dedicated to me. You will understand that I had to involve you in some answers, due to our history of reciprocated humor.

PP: I already told you that it was an honor, a pleasure and an emotion to share this dialogue with you. Even thinking I knew what you would answer me, because we know each other quite well. I do not say goodbye as I have done with other interviewees, because I will call you at any time or show up at your house.

I love you always.
