Los prejuicios machistas contra las mujeres están en todas las profesiones de la sociedad. Así, en el 2017, la galardonada fotógrafa norteamericana Gulnara Samoilova, de origen tártaro, que reside en la ciudad de New York, y con más de 40 años de experiencia combinada como fotógrafa callejera y documental, artista, impresora de cuarto oscuro, fotoperiodista y editora de fotos para Associated Press, decidió, después de enfrentar prejuicios de género en su propia carrera, y para romper el esquema de que la fotografía callejera es una categoría típicamente dominado por hombres, dar el paso al frente y crear Women Street Photographers (WSP), que primero comenzó como una cuenta de Instagram, y luego se ha transformado en posibilidades creativas de gran dimensión, como exposiciones itinerantes.
De esta manera, Gulnara propició visibilidad al trabajo de las mujeres fotógrafas callejeras, de todas las razas, etnias, credos, generaciones, habilidades e identidades sexuales y de género, en el mundo de hoy. Si cada foto es una mirada, ¿quién puede negar la sensibilidad, el buen gusto, la observación detallada, el sentido del humor, y la capacidad creativa de las mujeres fotógrafas?
La página web de Women Stret Photographers (WSP) es una plataforma libre y de participación con un enfoque inclusivo, expansivo y no tradicional, que muestra el trabajo de fotógrafas aficionadas y profesionales. Esta institución también edita libros, realiza residencias para artistas, filma documentales, y organiza exposiciones presenciales, como la realizada en el mes pasado de abril en Artspace PS109 en la ciudad de Nueva York. La muestra contó con 79 fotógrafas de 20 países, todas las cuales fueron seleccionadas por su capacidad para capturar increíbles momentos espontáneos, y constituyó una mirada maravillosa a la fotografía callejera en todo el mundo.
No podemos dejar de mencionar el apoyo recibido a esta iniciativa por Leica Women Foto Project, una plataforma de Leica Camera USA que sirve para empoderar la perspectiva femenina y su impacto en las historias visuales de hoy. Concebida en 2019, la iniciativa ha evolucionado para ofrecer premios en efectivo, tutorías, oportunidades comerciales y equipos Leica para atender la perspectiva femenina en el mundo de la fotografía.
Para esta sección de Humor Sapiens, y tomando en cuenta el carácter humorístico de la misma, hemos seleccionado diversas imágenes, que forman parte de la historia de Women Street Photográphers (WSP), y que ratifican el ingenio, y la diversidad artística de las mujeres en la narración visual de la fotografía callejera.

Women street photographers have a lot to show
Macho prejudices against women are found in all professions of society. Thus, in 2017, the award-winning American photographer Gulnara Samoilova, of Tatar origin, residing in New York City, and with more than 40 years of combined experience as a street and documentary photographer, artist, darkroom printer, photojournalist and photo editor for the Associated Press, decided, after facing gender bias in her own career, and to break the scheme that street photography is a typically male-dominated category, to step up and create Women Street Photographers (WSP), which first started as an Instagram account, and has since morphed into far-reaching creative possibilities, such as traveling exhibitions.
In this way, Gulnara gave visibility to the work of women street photographers, of all races, ethnicities, creeds, generations, abilities, and sexual and gender identities, in today's world.
If each photo is a look, who can deny the sensitivity, good taste, detailed observation, sense of humor, and creative capacity of women photographers?
The Women Street Photographers (WSP) website is a free and participatory platform with an inclusive, expansive and non-traditional approach, showcasing the work of amateur and professional female photographers. This institution also publishes books, holds residencies for artists, films documentaries, and organizes face-to-face exhibitions, such as the one held last April at Artspace PS109 in New York City. The show featured 79 female photographers from 20 countries, all of whom were selected for their ability to capture incredible candid moments, and was a wonderful look at street photography around the world.
We cannot fail to mention the support received for this initiative by the Leica Women Foto Project, a Leica Camera USA platform that serves to empower the female perspective and its impact on today's visual stories. Conceived in 2019, the initiative has evolved to offer cash prizes, mentorships, business opportunities and Leica equipment to cater to the female perspective in the world of photography.
