El humor es cosa seria. N°1

No podré salir a pescar”.

Friend reader, imagine the following scene: in a rather elite room, a very solemn gala party is held. The orchestra is playing slow music and the guests are dancing rhythmically.

Suddenly, a man is seen at the top of the balcony, looking down with a grim frown. He is a type of misshapen figure, very well dressed, although hunchbacked and with thick eyebrows, who looks at the dance with disdain and a certain suspicion. The music slowly fades to silence. The couples stop dancing. Defiantly, the gentleman prepares to descend the marble steps. On the first step, he slips and lands on his seat. One hears the occasional giggle, which is soon suppressed. The guy keeps falling, tum… tum… tum…

Now there are more contained laughs, because the descent is already frankly comical. The man bounces, does a pirouette, crashes into the wall and continues to fall.

Now people burst out laughing. At the bottom of the stairs the guy stretches out full length across the shiny, waxed parquet.

The man is dead.

When you can determine at which rung of the ladder the matter stopped being funny, you can determine what humor is.

This has several readings. One, that the comic and the tragic are sides of the same coin. They have their backs to each other, but they don't stop being together.

There are many people who, when feeling down, make their mood worse by saying things like: “How could I be so stupid! I behaved like a fifteen-year-old teenager”!

By the way, it would help them to keep their good humor saying phrases like “Every experience is a learning experience. This has not happened to me in vain.”

It would do us very well to proceed like this, because life does not have a book of complaints.

I clarify this because many of those born in this long and narrow strip that is Chile, tend to be too complaining and exempt themselves from all guilt. So much so, that many countrymen, when luck knocks on their doors, often complain about the noise.

Being a Journalism student, the field of Psychology was one of my favorites. I learned a lot from the so-called rational-emotive therapy, which points out how these thoughts that incite us to bad moods can be reduced to three errors that start from three types of basic setbacks. Let's review each of them:

-Contrariety type 1: "What I pretended to be, is not what I am."

Here is part of an absurd idea. “Others have started with less means than me, and have gone further. I'm a failure".

The opposite of that thought should have a dose of humor: “I know that there are people who have started from nothing. The difficult thing is to leave even with that”.

-Contrariety t|ype 2 annoyance: “I just had to catch this flu one weekend. I won't be able to go fishing."

I have known people who, in the middle of a flu state, lament because it will ruin their weekend, and what's more, they have to wait for the doctor to come see them.

To this we must put a positive attitude, almost hilarious. For example, if the doctor comes to the house and the wife says to the husband: "Fernando, it's the doctor who comes to see you!" Your answer could well be:

-"Tell him I can't take care of him because I'm sick."

That will flood the environment with healthy good humor, and even your children, your wife and the doctor will celebrate your way of reacting.

-Contrariety type 3 annoyance: “I went to bed to watch a good TV program and just nothing happened. Even the moments of leisure they screwed me ”.

Start cultivating humor. Rather than a response turned into a complaint, it would be better to lash out with an uplifting output:

– “I'll keep the television from before. When I had no image or sound.

Yes. You can cultivate a sense of humor, if you don't have it.

Have patience. Changing a habit takes 21 days; according to others, it takes a month. If during that time you squeeze your neurons to produce witty ideas, your perception of life will change.

But, this takes time.

When you do, you will be able to laugh at things that made you suffer in the past.

Don't forget that tragedy plus time... equals comedy.
