Envejecer con humor - Nebver (71 años) - Perú

Article in English

Hace 8 años, aproximadamente, que me he visto obligado a trabajar digitalmente.

Aging with Humor – Nebver (71 years old) - Perú

Nebver San Martín Herrera is a 71-year-old Peruvian plastic artist who has developed his creative activity through graphic humor, painting, a model artist, and a writer who has enthusiastically joined our search for what cartoonists around the world think. about aging. So, follow the responses of this magnificent artist:

«First, we are all subjected to those three parallels that govern and inexorably submit our lives: space, energy and time.

Second, while it is true that this tripod is inevitable as necessary, it is no less true that it is more or less general but also particular. That is to say, the advance or deterioration depend on chance or circumstances, on the one hand, as well as personal domain or control.

Third, the generational changes are legitimate and necessary since they make possible the variety and continuity of the wheels of life in multiple aspects.

Fourth, for the same reason, this change of posts is legitimate, such as perseverance and creativity, despite advanced age. There are plenty of examples to bear witness to this assertion.

And finally, fifth, it is also a shameful truth to use the role of the new generations as a pretext, to exonerate our precariousness, limitations, fatigue or lack of entrepreneurship or innovations.»

Does the cartoonist also age?

Nebver - «Like all matter, yes. Sometimes the natural process is brought forward for reasons beyond our control or unmanageable circumstances.»

Despite the advancement of the years (old age), the evidence of the biological deterioration of the body; that is, the hands tremble, the eyes fail; Is it possible that humor persists? Is it feasible to reverse that natural wear and tear?

Nebver - «Perhaps, with the first ailments of old age, one is assaulted by a harsh, unquestionable reality: everything that begins, ends. From the age of 70, that truth hits us mercilessly. In some it accelerates more than in others.

However, it can be reversed.

First, don't throw in the towel.

Second, to continue insisting on that humorous ardor, despite the lack of publishing through the media. Making our work public on social networks.

Fourth, be updated with the use of technological resources (where the digital tablet is a generous concubine) All possible means of social networks.

Fifth, continue creating as long as the brain support, hands and sight allow us.

Sixth, also enjoy the work of fellow countrymen and foreigners.

Seventh, Start giving master classes more often.

And finally, eighth, publish books of our anthological work.»

Does aging also damage the philosophical view of humor, making it more sour?

Nebver - «That may happen in some cases. They say that the pessimist is nothing more than a tired optimist. From where it can be inferred that the cartoonist, especially the rebellious or political one, has been a witness for so many years, that the powers and the system not only persist in their toxic stubbornness, but have even lost their few scruples. This noxious reiteration fuels the irony or reveals the rage in the responsive cartoon.

However, I must admit (as in everything), there are levels, hierarchies, in humorous work; Arriving, in some cases, to very poor results, lacking in ironic quality to fall into the most aggressive sarcasm.»

Does the look become more satirical or ironic?

Nebver - «Personally, despite being over 70 years old and, what is worse, witnessing the battered, filthy and delinquent turns of government, attached to the world super system, I am a stubborn graphic artist to respond to all these scoundrels, sharpening my constant irony.

I think, in some cases, some comedians, because of the above mentioned, resort to sarcasm or primitive elemental punch.»

Are there differences in your mood when you started and now after the time has elapsed? Which are?

Nebver - «Of course there are differences. I speak of the most. You don't feel or think the same from one end to the other.

First, by the powerful force of evolution (body, mind and assimilation of circumstances).

Second, the history (experiences of all kinds) covered.

Third, the specific weight of maturity, as a result of the existential scale.

Fourth, more graphic growth and creativity make better results possible."

Everyone believes that a comedian is a happy, funny person, is that a myth? Or is he a sour old dispenser of knowing smiles?

Nebver - «I think it is a resounding myth like a psychological mystery. I don't know colleagues with a sour profile. On the other hand, many are serious and others have a cheerful and even sarcastic mood.

Although old age makes us, almost all of us (not only humorists), more impatient and with a certain dose of irritability.»

What is harder to accept as you get older?

Nebver - «I have no doubts that the physical deterioration. The pulse begins to fail and a little sight. And that evidence, forceful, is undermining the spirit.»

Do you feel old? What is old age for you?

Nebver - «Rationally, given the apparent reality (physical deterioration), I understand that I am already old. But mentally, my process is slower. This fuels my humorous and artistic effort. Although with less force than before.

For me (and I think for the vast majority), old age is almost a synonym for old age. Despite the great accumulation of years, experience, the best graphic development and wisdom are also opposed; which have repercussions on results of a higher hierarchy.

However, it is opportune to denounce the mistreatment that the market throws in this regard. According to their rules, a graphic artist only serves until they are 50 years old, so they are content with a generation of relief that, in most cases, barely reaches mediocrity, offering ridiculous prices for their work, which strengthens their better acceptance and the consequent dismissal of the “old”.»

Is it easier to look at the old age of others than your own decadence?

Nebver - «I am lucky to witness colleagues who are much older and who continue to publish on the networks; others who have died working despite their advanced age. This has been a rare wedge, but a powerful incentive to continue and imitate.

On the sidelines, my intellectual advancement and my mischievous nature help me a lot, my neighborly spirit that stirs after the common good and against all kinds of abuse, with a dose of chili pepper and a sacred self-confidence to live life beyond decorum. .

Sure, I keep posting on the networks. I also write."

How was the adaptation to new technologies? Do you still prefer the basic techniques?

Nebver - «I confess I was lazy in accepting the inescapable advance of technology. He loved (as he does now) the pleasure of sketching, inking and painting, seeing and smelling that marvelous process. Until a good friend calls me one day saying that he bought me a Wacon digital tablet and that I would pay him back in five months. It was a generous and point-blank shot. Today I thank you enormously, because it "exonerates" my hand tremor that was tremendously accentuated by the ACV I suffered last year.

It has been approximately 8 years since I have been forced to work digitally. This technique has multiple advantages. I hardly use a pencil anymore. It took me a lot to adapt, but I grew more and more. Now almost everything I do with the tablet.

Despite its undeniable advantages (because art never deteriorates, it can be multiplied or cloned, deleted and modified as many times as required), I always yearn to return to the classic, because it has another flavor. Temptation is more and more frequent."

How do you see this evolution, mainly in the activity of the cartoonist or graphic humorist? What else has changed?

Nebver - «According to dialectic, the only permanent thing is constant change. So even not liking it is the core of evolution.

Despite this harsh truth, I must say that the new generations do not care much about the basic principle of good drawing and less about the hobby of a good creation, since the journalistic media market has withdrawn and conformed to the simple, basic , mediocre.

To this I must add that modern art has promoted anything or anything nonsense, under the pretext of unquestionably being art.

Those of us who are already up to our necks in the troubled waters of the 21st century are shaken by the accelerated advancement of technology, science, information, human relations, the economy, the market, politics and, in addition, art. .

So, if we don't just keep up with the times and, accepting tremendous challenges, we don't stop permeating our protestatory imprint, we will have failed.»

Is there as much or more creative freedom than before? Is there censorship when humor is published in the media?

Nebver - «Very rarely have I had problems of this type when I worked in the media and, above all when doing political humor. Undoubtedly, it has been fabulous luck, since censorship is inevitable (in some cases more than in others), since the owner of the medium that hires us and, for which he pays us, lives (we live) from the advertising that is publishes in his journalistic journal, does not allow us to openly attack those who support said company. It is, without a doubt, the great challenge for humorists and the owner of the press, to manage the rebellious power of graphic humor that the newspaper allows, without it directly attacking the advertising power (as an arm of the system) that makes the publication possible. of your commercial notice, all the machinery works.

Hence our work that, despite this difficult constant, becomes meritorious, like the doll and the spirit of the employer for allowing us both to excel."

How do you see the society in which they live older people?

Nebver - «The world has definitely changed at an unimaginable speed, I think to the detriment of the quality of life in almost all aspects. Given the vertigo of consumption and the market, ethical values, plus the growing demographic explosion and the accelerated zig-zag of supply and demand, workers (in general) who are over 50 years of age are already marked as "old ”. This blatant nonsense that fuels the system has shot up the usable human age a little more, to later make it disposable. In the best of cases, after reaching the age of 65. From that age, the slope is painful and denigrating. With very rare exceptions.

In my country, there are only 2 cases. That of two colleagues, perhaps the most famous, who still work in print media, both exceed 70 years of age. The merit is their own and, of course, that of the media.

On the other hand, we are 3 more comedians who are close to 70 years old. We all publish only on the networks. The one with the greatest activity and most recent works is the one who writes.»

When looking at the past, is it important to keep the most humorous moments alive, relegating tragedies or bitterness to oblivion, or are they stronger and capable of destroying those happier moments?

Nebver - «Those of us who do social or, better yet, political humor, do it in a historical context and, for us, it has already fulfilled its mission. Given that our work in the media has a nature of denunciation and ironic response to the injustices of the Government and the established system. I want to say that this kind of "graphic revenge" had its peak at the time it was made public for the benefit of readers like ours and the newspaper, like the hammered discomfort of the masters of pranks.

If we remember them, it is to celebrate from a distance, our little rebellious war, but not to compensate for some type of current setback; but rather to certify that the enemies of the common good are worse than before and, on the other hand, to guarantee the honest well-being of our dream.»

What is humor for you and what is its importance in society?

Nebver - «Graphic humor is like all art, very coarse. There is white, childish, erotic, black, pig, philosophical, social, religious, psychological, political, educational, supra-realistic, romantic, historical, health, animal, ecological, absurd humor, etc.

For the same reason, its enormous importance in culture. Doing so is important; and well, even bigger. Since the happy sentence that an image is worth a thousand words, I can assert without hesitation, that the historical seal of this gigantic power is plagued in our human evolution, from the petroglyphs and tribal graphic testimonies of that beginning to the abundant sample of the countless graphic humorists who have marked our so often implausible history with greatness.

In this sense I can add that graphic humor is essential in our lives. Not only because it is necessary, but, above all, an imperative. Since in this way they have not only served and serve to brighten up our daily grind, but also to wake us up and indignate us in the face of the atrocities of all power, under the guise of a punitive "festival". The examples are very fed up in this regard and all over the planet.”

Is senile dementia a variant of absurd humor?

Nebver - «From the absurd, maybe yes. Total, life is full of those similar things, right? Definitely, it is better to laugh so as not to get excited and, less, to cry; despite so much evidence to the contrary. One of them is senile dementia, which, only the family that suffers from it and supports it, has the greatest right to have an opinion about it. But I must emphasize that it is a disease that, parallel to its own deterioration, attenuates it with those seasonings of sudden joy, motivated by the dislocations of time, space and people, caused by the disease.»

Do you think that humor can help people better cope with aging and contribute to daily optimism with physical decline?

Nebver - «Absolutely yes. There are plenty of explanations and countless examples.”

Can mental deterioration be counteracted by humorous creativity? That is, if there are 12 jokes, and they already appear in the Bible, and the rest are variations, is there a tendency with age to recover old ideas, trying to make new variations, trying to improve them? Is it important to recycle in humor?

Nebver - «As a recommendation, it is essential not to stop creating until the brain allows it. I believe that from the age of 60 this activity should be accentuated. A commitment that will greatly help the development of humorous work.

The specialists also say that from the age of 50 the diet should be moderated, physical exercise encouraged and the daily rhythm carried out with a more relaxed and cheerful mood, in order to reach the elderly with better possibilities. What has been called a higher quality of life.

So, regarding the initial question, the answer is emphatically yes. And that if humor can be recycled, it can; but it is very isolated.”

What is easier, or more difficult, for an older person to look at the future with humor?

Nebver - «Of course it is more difficult. Given the deterioration and fatigue over the years. That is to say, it is not impossible, better still, it is necessary; but it does not suppose its ease.»

Are you scared of death or is dying of laughter the best way to close this cycle? Are you worried about the future of your job after you're gone?

Nebver - «I think that dying of laughter, literally, must be the best variant of closing the door of life. I am more afraid of those lazy and very painful blackouts. I do not want them. Hopefully the tranquility of a sudden and lethal blow will be favorable to me.

What does worry me (I hope this is not the case) is that the number of files of my coarse work remain attached to the void and become covered with a thick crust of oblivion. Likewise, I am very concerned about having an old age that is not favorable to me; especially if I become an unbearable burden."
