Eray Özbek – Su cuestionario se puede responder de múltiples maneras y algunas de las preguntas ya tienen respuestas dentro, así que resumiré y responderé de una manera más general, transmitiendo mi forma de pensar.
OMS - ¿La discapacidad física interfiere con su trabajo? ¿Podrás superar estas desventajas con nuevas técnicas, con instrumentos alternativos que recreen tu característica personal?
Eray Özbek - Desde mi infancia, enriquecer o suavizar los acontecimientos con humor me ha resultado muy útil. Dos de mis parientes mayores tenían talento para el humor, creo que los aproveché.
OMS - ¿El envejecimiento también cambia el aspecto filosófico del humor, volviéndolo amargo? Con la edad, con el peso de haber vivido mucho tiempo, de existir, de haber sido criticado varias veces… ¿la mirada se vuelve más satírica o irónica?
Eray Özbek - Está claro que vivir mucho tiempo, e incluso vivir, sólo es posible envejeciendo. Por tanto, no tengo derecho a quejarme de las pérdidas que he sufrido. Creo que estar activo de cualquier forma es una buena manera de ser feliz.
OMS - ¿Existen diferencias entre tu estado de ánimo cuando empezaste y ahora?
Eray Özbek - No creo que la vejez me haya aportado grandes ventajas. En cualquier caso, hay pérdidas y ganancias, pero en nuestra era donde casi todo está cambiando más rápido que nunca. Existe la posibilidad de que la experiencia y el conocimiento adquiridos a lo largo de los años sean sólo un brillante basurero o, de hecho, una molestia.
En todas las edades los jóvenes han sido propensos a la falta de respeto; pero los he visto mostrar su falta de respeto, especialmente hacia aquellos que de todos modos no lo merecen. Con el pretexto de corregir esto, sus habilidades de interrogatorio se vieron debilitadas. Pero hoy no será posible (esperamos) ganarnos el respeto de las generaciones más jóvenes, que ven que las generaciones mayores han llevado a la naturaleza y a la humanidad al borde de la extinción.
OMS- ¿Qué es lo más difícil de aceptar cuando te vuelves mayor? ¿Es necesario esforzarse más para mantener el estado de ánimo día a día o no es una cualidad sino un defecto? ¿Te sientes viejo? ¿Qué es para ti cuando lo ves?
Eray Özbek - Por supuesto, a medida que crezco, mis facultades físicas y mentales que producen caricaturas se debilitan... Piensa en los niños, cuando sus habilidades aún son inmaduras, producen algo sin preocuparse por ser apreciados, pero con entusiasmo, experimento la misma satisfacción, con mis oportunidades presentes.
OMS - ¿Qué es lo que más te preocupa, la falta de memoria o los problemas físicos?
Eray Özbek - Tengo déficit de memoria y problemas físicos. Pero, afortunadamente, creo que las posibilidades técnicas en desarrollo los han eliminado. Es un hecho que mi velocidad de producción ha disminuido, pero puede ser porque soy más exigente a la hora de elegir mis proyectos.
OMS - ¿Cómo fue la adaptación a las nuevas tecnologías? La velocidad del intercambio fue vertiginosa, lo que, por un lado, facilitó ciertos trámites técnicos, pero también complicó a quienes no les gustó el intercambio. ¿Cómo te pasó esto? ¿Sigues prefiriendo las técnicas clásicas?
Eray Özbek - Por mucho que no queramos, pronto no podremos utilizar los métodos tradicionales. La prensa es sustituida por Internet, el pincel es sustituido por programas de dibujo y el público clásico es sustituido por jóvenes impacientes. Tenemos que adaptarnos con ellos. Si este tren falla, es posible que ni siquiera sepamos sobre el próximo expreso.
OMS - ¿Qué es el humor para usted y qué importancia tiene en la sociedad?
Eray Özbek - El humor es la forma más humana de crítica. Me compadezco de quienes lo difaman, lo menosprecian y lo desagradan.

With more than seven decades of vital and artistic existence, we invite you to another conversation about aging with humor and as a cartoonist activist, there is nothing like asking: Does the cartoonist also age?
Eray Özbek – Your questionnaire can be answered in multiple ways and some of the questions already have answers inside, so I will summarize and answer in a more general way, conveying my way of thinking.
OMS - To what extent do physical disabilities interfere with your work? Can you overcome these disadvantages with new techniques, with alternative instruments that recreate your personal characteristic?
Eray Özbek - Since my childhood, enriching or softening the events with humor has been very useful to me. Two of my older relatives had a humorous talent, I think I took advantage of them.
OMS - Does aging also change the philosophical aspect of humor, making it bitter? With age, with the weight of having lived a long time, of existing, of having been criticized several times... does the look become more satirical or ironic?
Eray Özbek - It is clear that living long, and even living, is possible only by getting older. Therefore, I have no right to complain about the losses I have suffered.I think being active in any form is a good way to be happy.
OMS - Are there differences between your mood when you started and now?
Eray Özbek - I don't think old age has given me great advantages.In any case there are losses and gains, but in our age where almost everything is changing faster than ever, There is a possibility that the experience and knowledge gained over the years is just a glittering garbage dump, moreover, a hindrance.
In every age, young people were prone to disrespect; but I've seen them show their disrespect, mostly to those who don't deserve it anyway. Under the pretext of correcting this, their interrogation skills were tried to be blunted. But today, it will not be possible (hopefully) to earn the respect of the younger generations, who see that the older generations have brought nature and humanity to the point of extinction.
OMS - What is the most difficult thing to accept when you get older? Is it necessary to make more efforts to maintain your spirits on a daily basis or is it no longer a quality but a defect? Do you feel old? What does old age mean to you?
Eray Özbek - It is clear that with aging, my caricature-producing physical and mental faculties weaken… Think of children, when their skills are still immature, they produce something without worrying about being liked, yet with enthusiasm, I experience the same satisfaction with my present opportunities.
OMS - What worries you more, lack of memory or physical problems?
Eray Özbek - I have memory deficit and physical problems. But luckily, I think that the developing technical possibilities have eliminated them. It is a fact that my production speed has decreased; but that may be because I'm more picky when choosing my projects.
OMS - How was the adaptation to new technologies? The speed of the change was dizzying, which, on the one hand, facilitated certain technical procedures, but also complicated it for those who did not like the change. How did this happen to you? Do you still prefer classic techniques?
Eray Özbek - No matter how much we want to, soon we won't be able to use traditional methods. The media is replaced by the internet, the brush is replaced by drawing programs, and the classical audience is replaced by impatient youth. We have to adapt with them. If this train misses, we may not even know about the next express.
OMS - What is humor for you and what is its importance in society?
Eray Özbek - Humor is the most humane way of criticism. I pity those who vilify, belittle, and dislike it.
