He tenido y sigo necesitando y deseando evolucionar.

PP: Me gusta ver colegas optimistas.

Interview with Marilena Nardi

By Pepe Pelayo

You can joke about everything... but, unfortunately, not with everyone

On this occasion I decided to “talk” with someone I admire a lot. I had the honor of interviewing her in 2017 for this same site, because she was already a prominent figure in global graphic humor. In 2018 he won the World Press Cartoon Grand Prize and his work has an even greater impact and to this day he continues to collect international awards.

Last year I had the opportunity for him to agree to participate in my video-documentary series on humor theory, “The Illustrated Jester”, contributing his experiences, opinions and knowledge.

Now, once again, the very kind Marilena Nardi agreed to talk for this page.

I was going to introduce her by mentioning that she was born in 1966, in Chiampo, near Vicenza in Italy and talk, as usual, about her first steps in art, etc., but I think it would be best for her to do it herself.

PP: Dear friend, not to take my work away, nor to make you suffer, because I know that it is not easy to talk about yourself, but could you introduce Marilena Nardi yourself to the comedians of our site?

NARDI: I was born in Italy, from a family of simple origins. I owe a bit of the rebellious and dreamy spirit to my anti-fascist and partisan father, and to my mother the most pragmatic who allowed me to become independent early. I owe them both the ability to smile and enjoy the most authentic things in life.

They allowed me to work and pay for my artistic studies, a choice that is not at all obvious given the times and our means.

Today, in a few words, I am a designer who collaborates with several newspapers, alternating graphic humor, illustration and satire. And I'm also a teacher. The two professions have been two parallel paths for a long time, but since 2003 I started an illustration course at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice (I have been teaching there since 1992) and the "two vases" have begun to communicate with each other. In 2018 I adopted my son, who is now 12 years old, and this choice, as you can imagine, has mixed up the cards in our lives.

PP: I have no doubt that you are an excellent mother, due to the sensitivity, tenderness and strength that emanates from your work. I congratulate you again. And to continue getting to know you, I ask you: has your way of doing humor changed, evolved, from its beginnings to this moment?

NARDI: Yes, fortunately. Under all aspects. I have studied artistic studies, it is true, but graphic humor is not a school subject and if I look at my initial drawings I see them as very naive, both in terms of the content and the graphic aspect. She was good at drawing, but she was certainly not a Mozart of graphic humor, to put it jokingly. I have had and continue to need and desire to evolve.

PP: Well, I enjoy the comic opera Don Giovanni equally as much as your drawings, for example. But I would like to know, what has been the best and worst moment in your career in humor so far?

NARDI: An objectively negative moment was when in 2010 I was sued for two drawings. The newspaper I worked for supported me legally and everything went well (…5 years later). I don't know the best time. I have experienced several important moments at a professional level, such as the Forte dei Marmi Political Satire Prize or the Grand Prize at the World Press Cartoon, but what I remember with most pleasure is the time shared, the laughter and cartoons between colleagues and friends that we met thanks to this profession.

PP: I share that opinion with you, our profession is very rewarding, it is the best. And speaking of comedians, do you think you have a defined, clear influence from living or historical colleagues?

NARDI: I know that I owe a lot to my ideal teachers, Quino and Steinberg among them. I am curious and look at various contemporary and past authors, even from distant areas. Among my contemporaries I have many loves: Mattotti, Altan, Holland, Bozzetto... I love them very much, for different but not exclusive reasons. Surely I also drank from them more or less consciously.

PP: Could you tell me an anecdote, whether funny, or witty, or curious, that you have experienced during your career in humor?

NARDI: There is an anecdote that I have told other times. At the beginning of my career, I sent my CV. to a newspaper. Typed and, out of laziness, signed only "M. Nardi". I had attached some photocopies of my drawings and then got a telephone appointment through the editorial secretary. There was no internet and no way to find out about people first. When I showed up at the meeting, with my folder of drawings under my arm, the man who was supposed to evaluate my work told me that he had no time to waste on me, that he was already waiting for “someone Nardi.” He said it looking at me, with great annoyance, almost with contempt. When I told him that I was the Nardi in question and that he had a date with me, he stood like a pillar of salt. His eyes widened and he exclaimed, "Are you a woman?!" He probably never would have given me a date if he had known it from the beginning. He then justified himself by saying that he liked my poster because it was "very masculine." For their mentality, the adjective "masculine" defined a quality, in this case also graphic. I treasured what happened and, from that day on, I always signed only with my last name.

PP:  Good anecdote, Mr. Nardi, ha, ha… And suddenly getting serious: is humor an art, my friend? I am referring above all to its “parasitic” characteristic, since it only appears within an art (graphic, musical, scenic, etc.).

NARDI: I never thought of humor as a parasitic art form. I wouldn't like to imagine it like that, as something that lives only thanks to, or at the expense of, something else. I want to think rather that it is an art form that finds "physical" expression within other arts. There are territories that have blurred borders. Humor is one of them: it is fed by history, current affairs, literature, poetry, painting and drawing, by the life and sensitivity of those who express it and what results from it is once again available to those who express it. others, in a social, continuous and vital circuit. More than parasitism, I would say symbiosis. Without a doubt it is an art.

PP: I am not so convinced from a theoretical point of view, but it undoubtedly has its own language and as you say, it is nourished by many things and makes that vital circuit. And I said “parasite”, not because it exists or feeds on something else, but because when it appears it does so through an artistic manifestation (visual, musical, scenic, audiovisual art, etc.). But let's continue with the forms. Do you think that the personal caricature, the editorial cartoon, the so-called caricature or humorous caricature in general, the comic strip, the comic, humorous photography (and its modalities within it), etc., are forms that are contained within of "graphic humor"? Or do all or some of them not fall within that concept?

NARDI: There are defined areas, others more nuanced and others decidedly mixed. It really depends on the authors and their intentions. I am more inclined to distinguish between graphic humor and satire, because the purposes are different, although the tools used are the same. Whether it is a drawing, a photo, a cartoon, a strip or an editorial drawing, it is the purpose that changes the substance. If the intention is to entertain, or even smile and reflect together, perhaps we are more in the realm of graphic humor. If, on the other hand, the aspect of denunciation prevails, if, so to speak, the author with his drawing/photo/strip/caricature “puts his finger into the sore spot” then the context will be that of satire and editorial design.

PP: Theorists have never agreed on that, as you well know. And your opinion is as valid as that of any other creator or scholar. That's why I wanted to know yours. For this reason, cartoonists make personal caricatures, or editorial or customs, etc., because their intention is to make people laugh or smile, although some - like you - also combine that intention with that of thinking, but without ceasing to provoke it with humor no matter how conceptual the idea is, because otherwise they would not be “graphic comedians.” Do you agree with that?

NARDI: I agree with the meaning of the definition and I recognize that my drawings do not always come with a smile and the desire to provoke it. I gladly pay the price of not being a "pure" humorous designer: I need to feel free to draw with different registers, sometimes humorous, other times melancholic.

PP: You are lucky and in that I envy you, because you can express yourself in different registers. I can only create humor, when I have tried to create something “serious”, I don't like it one bit. And digging even deeper into these topics, we know that the ideal work of graphic humor is the one that shows a perfect invoice and content that makes us smile and think. But we often see a magnificent idea expressed with a poor workmanship and vice versa, an impeccable work in terms of form, but with a weak idea. Which of these last two variants do you accept better? Or none or them? Because?

NARDI: "A drawing is an idea with a line around it." The definition is not mine but it expresses well how the two things, idea and execution, must go hand in hand.

A beautiful idea needs adequate support, otherwise it is useless, it goes to waste. Perhaps, a beautiful drawing even without a great idea, at least expresses the beauty, the good execution of which it is made. Therefore, if I find myself, for example, being part of a jury and evaluating the designs of others, if I am forced to choose, between the two possibilities I choose a well-made design, even if the idea is minimal.

But if it's my job, I'm much stricter: the two things have to go together and I work on it until I'm satisfied.

PP: Totally agree! The two things must have the same quality and elaboration. But if I had to choose, in the world of art and in this case humor, without a doubt a form without an idea is more acceptable than an idea without a form. Now let's leave the theory, please, and get to the “practical” part. For example, about publishing works of graphic humor: Are there enough spaces? Do you see much difference between the humor created for contests and the rest? Is there enough consumer public?

NARDI: The spaces for newspapers are few. This is due to the crisis of the press that involves all its components. There are few specialized newspapers, space has been reduced in the traditional ones. Some countries are luckier, France for example, the public is more attentive and willing to buy and read newspapers and humorous magazines, author books, collections, catalogues.

In Italy, I have the impression that living in this profession is more difficult now than it was about twenty years ago. But it is also true that the Internet has opened new opportunities. Many newspapers resist the digital version. We must look for new ways in addition to the traditional way of publishing on paper. Some friends and colleagues work for television programs, making small animated videos of a humorous and satirical nature. That could be another way.

About the differences in production for the press and for contests. Yes, I see a lot of them, in terms of quality. But I also see a lot of competition and competition. I have been invited to serve on many juries and I can say this with full knowledge of the facts: each competition and the relative choices of the organizers and juries have different specificities. A big difference is made by the rules for admission to the contest and its purposes.

As for the public, I have the impression that it has changed and, at least in Italy, it has decreased. There is a lot of attention towards comics and illustration. In this sense, schools, exhibitions and festivals dedicated to these two sectors flourish. I see less interest in satire and graphic humor. Especially among young people, I see this with my students, they don't know what it is and they lack knowledge even of historical or very popular authors. I'm afraid it's because they get their information mainly from the web and little from newspapers (which in turn publish fewer drawings).

PP: I agree with you. Something similar happens in Latin America. Now it's the turn of something impossible not to touch. Is there a lot of censorship in the media, in governments and in sectors of society, the public these days? Much self-censorship? And to use the fashionable question: what are the limits of humor?

NARDI: Serious journalism is uncomfortable. The cartoonist, the editorial designer, is not exactly a journalist (except in specific cases) but a commentator and with his drawings he can be very annoying, so take a chance.

Censorship has always existed: it varies according to the laws, customs and democracy of a state. If the state is not very democratic, the work of a designer goes precisely in the direction of gaining a greater space of freedom that will be valid for him as for everyone. We know authoritarian countries where journalists are forced to silence, imprisoned or murdered. The same thing happens to cartoonists.

Between idiots or ignorant people the result does not change. The consequences can be very strong pressure on newspapers (with relative dismissal of cartoonists or the case of the NYT, which to avoid problems has chosen the path of self-censorship: no more satirical images and caricatures so as not to receive complaints and suffer economic damage) or The Charlie Hebdo massacre was even worse.

To answer your question, the limits of humor depend on the limits of each person's intelligence and sensitivity. You can joke about everything… but, unfortunately, not with everyone.

PP: I very much agree with you and with Eco. But let's address editorial graphic humor a little, specifically political humor. So I ask you, politically speaking, is humor left-wing, right-wing, both, or neither?

NARDI: It is commonly believed that humor is mostly left-wing. And perhaps on the left there was greater expressive freedom. However, I think it is above all a question of intelligence and intellectual honesty. Especially for those who make satire: a correct distinction must be maintained between criticism, even harsh, and political propaganda, which on one side or the other is always a slave.

PP: Better said, impossible. We are already on our way to finishing the interview. Hence the typical question: how do you see the future of graphic humor? Is the Internet the solution?

NARDI: I am a teacher and I can only be optimistic and have faith in the new generations. Graphic humor hurts, but I don't think it will die. I believe that other forms and other spaces/containers will be invented. Something is already visible: there is a more niche production, with curated editions, aimed at an audience of lovers and enthusiasts of the subject. And at the same time we see another more popular, more social current, which has several expressive modes and moves between the internet and self-production.

PP: I like to see optimistic colleagues. Thanks for that. And finally, are there any questions that I haven't asked you that you would have liked me to ask you? If so, can you answer it now?

NARDI: No, no more questions. I would just like to add that I was pleased to reflect on the questions you asked me and I thank you. It was time well spent.

I wish good work and good reading to those who read us.
